What You Should Be Reading…Now

This is coming a day late, but that’s kind of a good thing, given what went down on Wednesday:

  • The first item shouldn’t be read; rather it should be watched. The cringe inducing press conference in which Gov. Mark Sanford (R-SC) revealed he was having an international affair has to be seen to be believed.
  • It’s from last week, but Fareed Zakari’s Newsweek capitalist manifesto is worth your time (as is Matt Taibbi’s characteristically sarcastic – and occasionally profane – take down at True/Slant).
  • This take on the main stream media’s need to go lay out on the fainting couch after a dirty hipper blogger got in a prime question at the president’s press conference yesterday is instructive.
  • Why do writers write for free?
The New Yorker’s Atul Gawande, author of the article on health care reform making its way through egghead circles at the moment, answers his critics.

  • Jane Mayer on the challenges Leon Panetta faces as he tries to turn the page on the Bush era C.I.A.
  • And, this is a shameless plug, but please check out San Francisco magazine’s “Best of the Bay” issue…I helped fact check it.
