About that DHS report on political extremism…

Back in April, the Department of Homeland Security released a report that warned of the potential of rising right wing extremism in response to the new administration’s political agenda. Shortly after it was released, the usual suspects on the political right went ballistic. They claimed they were being unfairly targeted by the administration and some GOP leaders went so far as to request that DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano resign.

But that was before we had the murder of Dr. George Tiller by an anti-abortion activist. Then we had Tiller’s murderer warning of more of these sorts of attacks and today, we have a white supremacist shooting up the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C.

Journalists are fond of narratives and patterns. In fact, in j-school, we’re taught three of something make a trend (“one, two, trend”). That might be a bit simplistic, but some of those yelling loudly about that DHS report might want to revisit their thinking in light of recent events. They won’t, of course. But it would be nice if they did.

Updated to add: The DHS report that got folks up in arms was originally requested by…the Bush administration.
