Winter music playlist for city dwellers

Winter in San Francisco has arrived, which simply means the city is under perpetual gray skies and the constant threat of rain for four months. Weather this crappy can wreck your mood if you’re not used to it, but seeing as I’ve been here almost six years, I welcome it as it’s as close to a seasonal change as we get here. Each season brings with it different moods and stirs certain emotions and, at least for me, those moods and emotions bring to mind certain songs. The constant rain in S.F. makes me introspective, and the emptiness that visits the city during the holidays only heightens that feeling. If you’re feeling contemplative this season, put these songs on your iPod and take a stroll through the streets of your town and get lost for awhile:

  • “Incident On 57th Street” Bruce Springsteen
  • “Tears All Over Town” A Girl Called Eddy
  • “NYC” Interpol
  • “Numbness for Sound” Howie Day
  • “Hang On, Siobhan” The Walkmen
  • “The Boxer” Simon & Garfunkle
  • “Strange and Beautiful” Aqualung
  • “Cole’s Corner” Richard Hawley
  • “Stay Out of Trouble” The Kings of Convenience
  • “Sonnet” The Verve
  • “City of Blinding Lights” U2
  • “Sister Gone” Sea Ray
  • What Led Me to This Town” The Jayhawks
  • “Tears Are In Your Eyes” Yo La Tengo
  • “Far Far Away” Wilco
  • “Different Names for the Same Thing” Death Cab for Cutie
  • “There is a Light That Never Goes Out” The Smiths
  • “Knives Out” Radiohead
  • “The Greatest” Cat Power
  • “Xmas” Jesse Malin
  • “You Could Not Decide” The French Kicks
  • “Sleepy Night” The Chamber Strings
